Sikeston has been home to me since 1976. Both of my boys, now teenagers, grew up here. It's actually an interesting and enjoyble place to live, although I didn't always think so. I grew up and lived in small towns in and around the bluffs of the Mississippi River in southern Illinois. When I first moved here, I did not at all like or appreciate the landscape, so devoid of the bluffs and hills I loved. I know now, however, that to the sizable farming community in the bootheel of Missouri, this rich, flat ground possesses it's own unique beauty. We even have an agricultural museum here.
In addition to it's strong agricultural identity, Sikeston holds a few other claims to fame. I've talked to total strangers as far away as Tampa, Florida who've eaten "throwed rolls" at Lambert's Cafe in Sikeston. The annual Sikeston Jaycee Bootheel Rodeo is another thriving tourist attraction and a boon to the local economy. (If you don't like large crowds, traffic jams, or country music, however, you might want to look for something else to do during rodeo week.) And we mustn't forget the fact that we're perched atop the New Madrid Fault, which spawned three of the largest earthquakes in recorded history.
